Hawaiian Sweet Bread French Toast

One thing that I kept seeing on Breakfast menus while in Maui was Hawaiian Sweet Bread French Toast. So since we had a kitchen at the house we were staying at my Aunt and I tried it ourselves and it turned out great!

Hawaiian Sweet Bread French Toast

  • 1 loaf Hawaiian Sweet Bread
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2easpoon vanilla
  • 1/8teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Salad oil or butter

Directions: Slice bread crosswise so that each slice is about 1 1/2" thick. Cut each slice into thirds, if desired. Combine remaining ingredients, except oil. Quickly dip slices (do not soak) in egg mixtures and cook on hot oiled griddle until golden brown on both sides. Keep egg mixture stirred and spices well blended. For a delicate orange flavor, add the grated peel of one orange to egg mixture.

Makes 6 servings.

Want to put a twist on it try this:

Bananas Foster French Toast

  • 4 (3/4 inch) slices of Hawaiian Sweet Bread
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3/4 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup or 1/2 stick butter
  • 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 4 ripe bananas, peeled and cut into 1/4 inch diagonal slices

Directions: Whisk together eggs and milk in a shallow bowl. Dip bread slices in egg mixture.

Spray skillet with cooking spray and heat for one minute over medium-high heat. Cook the bread until golden brown, turning once. Remove from skillet and keep warm.

Melt butter in the same skillet. Add sugar and mix well. Add bananas and cook, stirring constantly, until bananas are glazed and hot. Serve banana mixture over toast.

Makes 4 servings.

This is the best recipe for Hawaiian Sweet Bread french toast, and regular french toast for that matter! Thank you for posting this!
