One of the best travel tips I have is to ask the locals you meet along the way! As soon as you arrive somewhere ask the people who work at the car rental, airport, hotel, etc where they like to go eat, their favorite things to do, the best deals, etc. Almost all the time their recommendations will be worth it!
Also use tripadvisor.com to check places out when you trip. You can create a "trip" before you go and add all sort of things to do, eat, see, etc where you are going- a lot of locals tend to comment on things on this site (I am PandaLHU on there). I also turn to urbaspoon.com (PandaLHU) and yelp.com (Jessica L.)
