Fall recipes: Dairy-less Creme Brulee from The Parkside

Silken tofu is so versatile and is great as a dessert base in so many applications. The Parkside's signature "Silken Chocolate Tofu Heart" is a dark chocolate mousse-like dessert and is rich and creamy and the best part...low fat. This white chocolate/tofu version of creme brulee has been a popular addition to its dessert repertoire. This is one of the easiest, yet elegant desserts to be found. The candied ginger is the little surprise at the bottom!

RA Sushi’s first-ever Facebook Photo Contest winners

On Sept. 30, 2009, RA Sushi’s first-ever Facebook Photo Contest came to a close. The contest encouraged patrons to submit photos of themselves eating the legendary Viva Las Vegas Roll from RA Sushi, a roll that often ranges anywhere from one to three and a half inches in height and between two to three inches in diameter or more.

The contest’s first prize, a $50 RA Sushi Gift Certificate and second prize, a $25 RA Sushi Gift Certificate encouraged the crazed sushi lovers of Baltimore to test, document and share their sushi-eating limits in categories including: “Biggest Mouth”, “Most Creative”, and “Most people to eat a Viva Roll in one picture”.

Rita O’ Nabhan took first place in the most popular category of the contest, “Most Creative”, by using her chopsticks as “tusks” and letting the Viva Roll slide down them into her mouth. Amanda Kehl had the most votes in the contest from any category with 40 overall “Likes” for “Biggest Mouth”. Lastly, the most people to eat a Viva Roll award goes to four ladies who won with 20 votes: Megan Holzman, Jackie Mills, Michelle Mercier and Jess Callahan.

Carrabba’s Italian Grill still has it

So what are your opinions on chain restaurants?

I grew up in a small town in PA and all we really had was bars that served food and chain restaurants. I remember growing up that all I wanted for my birthday dinner was Red Lobster. As time has passed and I have moved to the big city I have noticed a lot (but not all) of the chain restaurants the food has gone down hill. I was out for a friend’s birthday to Red Lobster in White Marsh and ordered a combo and was very disappoint in the flavor and quality of the food. TGI Fridays was the same way. In High School and College Fridays they were the hot spots. It is disappointing because many of these chain restaurants offer such great deals and specials. Now I am in no way saying all chain restaurants are horrible and that I will never eat in one again.

In fact just recently I was headed to a Carrabba’s Italian Grill and was impressed with the food and service I had gotten. I had the Chicken Bryan with goat cheese, sundried tomatoes and a basil lemon butter sauce ($16.50). The chicken was dry and the lemon butter sauce was very flavorful. My Husband got his favorite staple of Chicken Parmesan sautéed chicken breast coated with Italian breadcrumbs, topped with pomodoro and melted mozzarella ($16.50). His chicken was also cooked well and wasn’t dry. Our server was atop of everything and always made sure our drinks were full. In all the times I have been to a local Carrabba’s Italian Grill I have never been disappointed.

So Carrabba’s Italian Grill still gives me hope for chain restaurants. And I will please take second order of the Chicken Bryan!

Local Baltimore chefs take on the Farm to Table Tour

With the change of seasons and menus at farm to table restaurants many wonderful new and yummy items are being added to menus. With my mind filling with pumpkin dishes let me tell you about an event I was emailed about…

To check out some great food ideas check out the Toyota Hybrid Farm to Table Tour the Baltimore Farmers Market & Bazaar on Sunday, October 4, beginning at 8:00 a.m. and ending at 12:00 p.m.

Throughout the market, 12 local chefs and farmers will be paired together for a day that highlights the Baltimore Farmers Market’s offerings. The chefs will prepare special tastings showcasing their partner farm’s fresh ingredients and visitors will have the opportunity to sample the chefs’ creations while also learning more about the market vendors, their products, and how to buy and eat seasonally.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to select potted culinary herb plant starts at the Mobile Garden Highlander Hybrid, and can also enter for a chance to win a unique culinary prize package. Toyota will also provide interested market goers with the opportunity to take a ride in the 3rd Generation Prius or a 2009 Highlander Hybrid and take home a John Boos cutting board as a thank you gift.

"This wonderful partnership with Toyota brings an exciting worthwhile event to the Baltimore Farmers Market. The Farm to Table Tour gives market-goers an opportunity to discover various culinary dishes that can be made with fresh food purchased directly from farmers,” said Bill Gilmore, Executive Director of the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts. “In addition, the contribution made by Toyota in support of the Baltimore Farmers Market demonstrates their commitment to our partnership.”
