Shirley Phillips famous crab cakes recipe from Phillips Seafood restaurant

Shirley Phillips Crab Cakes
Shirley Phillips Crab Cakes
Phillips

What better way to warm you up during the long winter days then bring some sunshine filled days back by putting Chesapeake Bay crab cakes on your table from Phillips seafood restaurants. They’re one of the most popular items on American restaurant menus. And they are easy to make at home too! Just add a little salsa, some aioli or even a slaw – and your home cooked crab cake will come alive.

This recipe was developed by Shirley Phillips, co-founder and co-owner of Phillips Foods and Seafood Restaurants. This is the original recipe first used in Phillips Crab House in Ocean City, Maryland in 1956, and is the same recipe used in all Phillips Seafood Restaurants today.

Kamishbright recipe from Joe Squared in Baltimore- a winter cookie treat

Fresh baked Kamishbright
Fresh baked Kamishbright
Photo from Joe Squared

Looking for something fun to do with the kids during these cold winter months when everyone is shut indoors, then why not bake cookies? While baking cookies is fun, it also gives parents an opportunity to teach their kids useful skills such as counting, reading and safety precautions.

This is a very simple cookie recipe that Joe's (Chef/owner of Joe Squared in Baltimore) grandmother brought over from eastern Europe. The secret is the same as making biscuits, they must not be overworked. In the shorter days of the winter months a fast cookie like this is ideal, leaving more time for lounging around and eating them.

It is also featuring two food-friendly wines from New Zealand. The sauvignon blanc pairs well with the Mussel Fritters and Shellfish Stew, while the pinot noir is a great complement to the King Salmon and Grass-Fed Filet Mignon. Two New Zeeland inspired cocktails are the Kiwi Meringue Pie is a light cocktail that includes fresh kiwi muddled with vanilla vodka, kiwi syrup, simple syrup and fresh-squeezed lemon juice, topped with a delicious handmade kiwi whipped cream and the Kiwi Quencher pairs fresh kiwi and strawberries with aged rum, kiwi syrup and fresh-squeezed lemon juice topped with lemon-lime soda served over ice.

Ruby Tuesday has a giveaway and plans to offer bar guests a free Ruby Mini, or miniature burger, with fries, when a customer orders his or her first drink priced at $3 or more. Burger King also introduced Funnel Cake Sticks, a new dessert-snack. They come in a pack of nine for a suggested $1.79. Funnel Cake Sticks are fried, sprinkled with powdered sugar and served with icing for dipping.

Morton's steakhouse at Park Place in Annapolis closed

I just received a phone call that the Morton's steakhouse at Park Place in Annapolis closed over the weekend. Morton's closed on Saturday after being open for more than two years.

I had the chance to visit the location over this past summer in July and meet Klaus Fritsch, Morton's co-founder for an event that celebrated the release of the new "Morton's The Cookbook: 100 Steakhouse Recipes for Every Kitchen".

Although Morton’s Annapolis closed, Morton’s The Steakhouse in Baltimore (300 S. Charles Street in the Sheraton Inner Harbor) remains open. Morton’s Baltimore is also honoring any gift cards from our Annapolis guests, which can also be redeemed at any of their other 76 Morton's locations worldwide.

Silver Moon Diner serves up international fare

The Silver Moon Diner and Restaurant claims they have something for everybody- breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and international fare.

We were served a basket of fresh bread that was topped with red and green sesame seeds for the winter holidays.

After scanning the large menu I elected to start with a cup of Maryland Crab soup ($2.80). It was your average soup with a nice flavor. For my main course I had the Gyro Deluxe ($8.75) which was a gyro, Greek salad, and French fries with Tzatziki sauce. The Gyro was very fully loaded and as good as any Gyro I have had before. The salad had the largest chunks of feta cheese I had ever seen and the Greek dressing had a very nice flavor.
