“Do the Derby” at Mt. Washington Tavern- plus derby recipes

On Saturday, May 1, “Do the Derby” at the Mt Washington Tavern at its all-day affair that’s bringing Churchill Downs to Charm City.

KFC announces “Buckets for the Cure”

KFC is joining the fight against breast cancer with a national "Buckets for the Cure" campaign. They are striving to help educating more women and men about breast health, generating support for the cause and attempting to make the single largest donation in the history of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Through May 23, KFC will be dedicating special pink buckets to Komen for the Cure, with KFC restaurant operators having donated 50 cents for each pink bucket purchased before May 9.

To raise additional awareness about breast cancer, KFC has gone pink brand-wide. It started with changing the color of KFC's iconic pink bucket from red to pink. KFC also gave its "White House" headquarters the pink treatment, with lights, a banner and an oversized, pink Colonel-style ribbon tie. It also painted a Louisville restaurant pink from top to bottom and even temporarily changed the color of the Colonel's suit from white to pink.

Ruth's Chris Steak House Bread Pudding recipe

Bread pudding is a dessert popular in British cuisine, Puerto Rican cuisine, Mexican cuisine, Argentina, Louisiana Creole and that of the Southern United States, as well as Belgian and French cuisine.

It may be served with a sweet sauce of some sort, such as whiskey sauce, rum sauce, or caramel sauce, and sometimes  sprinkled with sugar and eaten cold in squares or slices.

Milan's new sushi Italiano menu

itMilan which serves Italian/Mediterranean delights has announced a new Sushi Italiano menu. Sushi Italiano, or Italian sushi, is a fusion of both Italian and Japanese cuisine using the concept of Japanese sushi with Italian ingredients.

“Since opening in January we’ve had time to experiment with the idea of sushi Italiano and come up with some really creative and exciting new rolls,” said Executive Chef Stephen Carey. “Those who liked the rolls from the opening menu are going to be really impressed, and those who haven’t had a chance to try sushi Italiano before are going to have to come in and try it.”

Milan’s new sushi Italiano rolls range from $12 to $18 and include:

• Milan Rotolo: Avocado, sun dried tomato, fried calamari, nori, seasoned rice, white tuna, yellowfin tuna, basil pesto, blood orange balsamic glaze and scallions (I tried this one and loved it)
• Antipasti Rotolo: Fresh mozzarella, soppresata, prosciutto di parma, fresh herbs, pickled vegetables and balsamic glaze
• Aragosta E Gamberetti Rotolo: Lobster and shrimp roll with cold water lobster, shrimp, mixed greens, julienne vegetables, scallions, spicy remoulade and sriracha

32 Top Chefs Battle for the Title of Mason Dixon Master Chef- All for a Good Cause

32 local teams, each consisting of an executive chef and a sous chef, will be cooking competitively. The multi-week event is being held in high style in the Grand Ballroom of the historic Belvedere. Starting on Monday, May 10 for two evenings per week for 16 weeks. Each evening’s event begins with a happy hour at 5 p.m. and dinner served at 6:30 p.m., followed by the competition at 8 p.m. and judging beginning at 9 p.m.

First to compete is Stephen Carey of Milan when he takes on Mark Ricker of Morsel. Then on Tuesday, May 11, Matthew Merkel of The Reserve challenges Antonios Minadakis of Jimmy’s Famous Seafood.

A panel of judges, including industry experts, local celebrities, and audience members will determine the winning teams- and guess what I am one of those judges! One of three well-known food experts will rotate as host of the event, including Jerry Pellegrino, Sergio Vitale, and Damon Hersh.

With the welcome of Spring there are many new and coming places to check out in Baltimore:

• All Nations Restaurant at 7 E. Lexington St. It is open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The menu offers a variety international dishes from around the globe, including pizza, overstuffed subs, pasta, and salad.
• Prime Steakhouse at 1719 Eastern Avenue. Chef Timothy Dean helps bring a classic upscale fine dining experience with an American and French inspired menu including steaks, seafood and chops with pricing not exceeding $30.
• Squisito at 7938 Crain Highway in Glen Burnie. The menu offers a variety of Pizza & pasta
• Neopol Savory Smokery in Easton Square Market in Easton, MD. They strive to offer handcrafted food featuring fresh, local and often organic products.
• Milan at 1000 Eastern Avenue has announced that it will be offering brunch service on Sundays. Brunch will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will include an à la carte menu prepared by Executive Chef Stephen Carey.
• Blue Grass at 1500 S. Hanover St in Federal Hill. It is offering a contemporary American menu with ingredients from local producers.
• Stuggy’s at 809 S. Broadway in Fells Point. The sausage and hot dog shop's emphasis is on food: simple, delicious gourmet food. The menu hosts a wide variety of items such as specialty dogs & sausages, Bison Jerky, and Fried Oreo Cookies.

RA Sushi has announced that they are bringing back the O’s Roll again this baseball season starting today with the home season opener tomorrow against the Toronto Blue Jays and throughout the 2010 baseball season.

The O's Roll is an eight-piece spicy lobster roll topped with fresh salmon and avocado drizzled with an orange spicy mayo sauce ($11.00).

“The O’s Roll was a crowd favorite last year as Baltimoreans showed their support for the hometown team,” said Scott Bernas, general manager of RA Sushi in Baltimore and a devoted Orioles fan. “We’re excited to bring it back for the 2010 season.”

Guests will be able to order the O’s Roll during lunch, happy hour and dinner hours seven days a week and will be able to receive $2 off the roll when they come in the day of a game with their ticket stub from that game. For those who can’t make it to Oriole Park at Camden Yards, RA has several large-screen HD-TVs tuned in to games in its bar area.

“All of us at RA Sushi are excited to root for the Orioles this season,” said Bernas. “We often have players from the Orioles come in and we want to be sure they know all of us at RA are big fans.”

RA Sushi is open 7 days a week starting at 11 a.m., the sushi bar and kitchen close at 11 p.m. and the bar is open until 1 a.m. or later every night. Happy Hour food and beverage specials are offered Monday through Saturday, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Flying Fish Lounge, a reverse happy hour held on Sundays, has food specials from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. and drink specials 8 p.m. to midnight.
