Happy 4th Blogoversary to me giveaway

Well 4 years today I started Adventures in Baltimore Restaurants with my first post about Taneytown Deli & Sandwich Shoppe!

Over the last four years things have moved in a direction I would have never though of- and I most have that to thank because of you my readers!!

How it all started...
A few years back while I was attending College of Notre Dame in MD I was required for my one class to start a blog about anything I wanted.  Well since I grew up in a town that only has 2 red lights called Muncy, PA (not counting what is at the Lycoming Mall- which did have a Friendly's) there wasn't many restaurants around to eat at except some fast food joints, bars and "mom & pop" joints.  If you want more selection you had to jump on I-180 and drive about 20 minutes to Williamsport, PA (home of the little league world series).  It was the "big" city for us- nothing compared to Baltimore by any means.  Here you would find some chains like Red Lobster, Olive Garden, and other local places.  So I figure now that I live in the real "big" city I didn't want to eat at chain places all the time and wanted to explore the world of restaurants here in Baltimore. So I started blogging about where we went as a record for myself. Then before I knew I gained followers and they kept on coming. Then I got picked up by Foodbuzz.com and then some other sites asked me to be a featured writer and then finally came along Examiner.com.  Plus a few other places after that wanted to feed my articles.  So that is how it all started.  And now you can find my articles on many sites (click here to see a list)

I am very thankful that this sort of fell in my lap because I have had some great experiences from it and met some great people (could name them all put that would take a while).  It has also brought some great experiences for my husband because he does photography and has taken taken some YUMMY food shots!

The most rewarding thing about blogging is...

There are many things I find rewarding about blogging but one of the most rewarding parts of my blogging is giving back. Over the years I have had the opportunity to participate in different was to earn money for charity with my blogging. This past year I participated in the ShopRite Partners In Caring Bloggers In Caring program and participated in Blog It Forward To Fight Hunger. I was able to get 3,000 boxes of cereal donated to local food banks in ShopRite’s and Baltimore trading area! In support of this there is a special-edition Honey Nut Cheerios box featuring the photo mosaic of myself and fellow Bloggers In Caring. Since may I have been a celebrity judge for the Mason Dixon Master Chef Tournament that is helping raise money for Moveable Feast which is a local non-profit Baltimore charity that provides meal delivery service to homebound People Living with AIDS/HIV, women undergoing breast cancer treatment as well as their families. (The tournament is winding down but you can still get tickets)

The Giveaway...
I love celebrating and tend to give even when its my celebration- so in honor of my 4th Blogoversary of Adventures in Baltimore Restaurants I am going to give 1 lucky reader a 3 Month Dinner of the Month Club from Restaurant.com.  How do you enter- that's easy!  Just leave a comment on this post saying why you follow me, your favorite post of mine or which restaurant I have reviewed do you want to try?  Make sure you included a valid email address so that I can contact that 1 random lucky winner! Things are getting fierce at the Mason Dixon Master Chef Tournament plus new rules and changes

Cranberry Stilton mousse with
candied pistachios and orange
reduction by Melissa Fordham
Photo: Lemmo Photography

Round 3 kicked-off this Monday, August 16th with some updates in the rules for the chefs for the remaining rounds and extra events have scheduled.

There are some new rules and changes for Round 3, as well as the Semi-Finals and Finals for the chefs:
  • ROUND 3 – Each chef may again bring three secret ingredients, but nothing previously used as a secret ingredient in Round 2 may be used again. As an added challenge, we’ve asked the chefs to re-create a classic for one of their courses (i.e. a new version of grilled cheese, new trending version of a burger, spin on an apple pie, etc.) something that breathes new life into a classic and shows their individuality as a chef as well as highlights their creativity.
  • ROUND 4 (Semi-Finals) - a different cheese needs to be used in each course. Also, each course needs to be from a different geographic region/ethnicity (i.e. Greek, Asian, Italian).
  • ROUND 5 (Final) – click here to read and find out more and see latest video

Just in case you were wondering

Just in case you were wondering why there was no activity this past week- I was on vacation!  My Husband and I spent some time with my parents up at the 1,000 Islands in NY and then headed up to Canada and visted Montreal and Quebec City.  Yes I took plenty of food pictures along the way and will be sharing them soon.  You can also check out pictures from our trip here (give it a day or two before all the pictures are up).

Things will be back and running today

I am looking forward to this cookbook to come out so I can recreate some of my favorite dishes from my trp (like Poutine, Beaver Tails, Rabbitt)

Round 2 is under way at the Mason Dixon Master Chef Tournament

Chilled Prince Edward Mussels with Citrus and Chilies
Chilled Prince Edward Mussels with Citrus and Chilies
Round 2 is under way at the Mason Dixon Master Chef Tournament and on Monday, July 26th I attended the Mason Dixon Master Chef Tournament as an observer not a judge. It was nice to attended and be able to take everything in with a different perspective.

Chef Brian Parks of The San Carlos & The Hop attended York County School of Technology and then attended the Pennsylvania Culinary Arts School in Pittsburgh, PA. He worked three years at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs and then moved to Key West, Florida where he spent two and a half years furthering his career in culinary arts. Chef Brian’s cooking style is contemporary American with the combination of French and Caribbean. Chef Brian Parks says “one of my favorite dishes to prepare is Rosemary Braised Lamb Shank, served with soft butternut squash polenta and natural jus and roasted garlic aioli drizzle."

Chef Kenneth Plante of Red Star studied at the Baltimore International Culinary College. He was the apprentice at Linwoods in Pikesville for four years before becoming a chef at Sotto Sopra, and a sous chef at Belmont in Elkridge. He is now currently the Executive Chef at Red Star. Chef Kenneth describes his cooking style as old world European classical, with emphasis in attention to simplicity that lets the ingredients speak for themselves. Chef Kenneth says “one of my favorite dishes to prepare is California lobster pasta, which uses California dates, mission figs, humboldt fog artisan goat cheese, and homemade stracceti pasta with fresh Maine lobster.”

Hamilton Tavern offers beer, comfort food and fresh produce with your every meal

Hamilton Tavern brings a nice variety of beer and comfort food to the every growing and popular stretch on Harford Road. You walk in and are welcomed by a crowded bar with locals and hardwood floors and a pressed-tin ceiling giving a neighborhood saloon atmosphere- the type where everyone knows your name.

The menu here is small to the point in fits one just one page but every item is tempting. They also offer excellent specials and the menu changes a bit with the season as to take advantage of seasonal produce and seafood. There is even good selection of choices for vegetarians.

A great way to start off with is to try the Fried Dill Pickle Chips with zesty goat cheese sauce ($4). Thick cut pickle chips deep friend in batter. A weird thing some may think but you will become a definite a fan of it.

It's that time of year again: Baltimore Restaurant Week and you can get a sneak peak

It's that time of year again- Baltimore Restaurant Week

Starting on Friday, August 13 through Sunday, August 22 you can take part in Baltimore’s Restaurant Week

Want a sneak peak?

That right, this year on Thursday, August 12, you can taste-test some of the featured appetizers. It’s the restaurant week kickoff event, “The First Course - Appetizer Challenge,” in which restaurants will duke it out to determine who creates the tastiest appetizers around.

The appetizers will be judged by the public and a panel of celebrity judges. You can try some free samples of the appetizers (while supplies last) so that you can help make the call on the best appetizer and select the People’s Choice winner. Awards will also be presented based on judges’ choice, and best use of locally sourced ingredients.

What is Restaurant Week?

Participating restaurants will offer special three-course dinner prix fixe menus for $35.10 (liquor, tax and gratuity not included). Many will also offer three-course lunch prix fixe menus for $20.10 per person (liquor, tax and gratuity not included). Some restaurants are also offering additional value-added opportunities including wine flights and wine pairings to accompany the prix fixe meals.

“Great cities have great events that bring people together and foster a sense of community,” said Downtown Partnership of Baltimore President Kirby Fowler. “Baltimore Summer Restaurant Week is a wonderful example of that type of event. It brings people together in support of our outstanding restaurants, our locally grown foods, and our wonderful Downtown.”

Baltimore Restaurant Week helps out…

For every restaurant that participates in Baltimore Summer Restaurant Week, Visit Baltimore and Downtown Partnership will donate $50 to The Journey Home, which provides services to assist the homeless in finding permanent and supportive homes. You can also find donation boxes at participating restaurants and are encouraged to make a donation following their dining experience.

“Restaurant Week allows us to share Baltimore’s culinary gems with visitors and locals alike,” said Tom Noonan, Visit Baltimore president and CEO. “Summer Restaurant Week allows diners to enjoy Baltimore’s culinary scene at a great value while we showcase some of Baltimore’s best restaurants and little known popular spots.”
Online Reservations
Some of the restaurants except online reservations at OpenTable. You are urged to make reservations early because the most popular restaurants fill up quickly. You can see which restaurants have online reservations for Baltimore Restaurant Week here
