Havana Road is flavorful and welcoming

You can’t help but excited when you come across a restaurant that offers flavorful food at reasonable prices – that is exactly what Havana Road is!

This small and cozy restaurant is situated on Pennsylvania Avenue in Towson serves only traditional Cuban fare. The small dining space welcomes you with warm, earthy colors with glowing lights overhead, vintage photos decorating the wall and in cigar boxes on the tables.

The menu maybe limited, however, but what it does offer is done well with using all-natural, wholesome ingredients, with every recipe. The entrees are served with tasty portions of black beans and rice.

The first thing that may catch your eye to start with is the Bayamo Dip Trio ($6) with Pepino (creamy cucumber dip), Cuban Salsa, and Mojo Sauce (made with garlic, olive oil and a citrus juice) served with Pan Cubano (Cuban bread).

Local students get a sushi lesson with RA Sushi

Last week RA Sushi came to visit Garrett Heights Elementary Middle School to do a sushi lesson with a class that had been working on a unit about exploring Asian cultures both past and present. Between the classroom teacher and the resource teachers (myself included – library media) they put together arts integration unit.

The students got to sit down and learn from Sushi Chef Andy of RA Sushi about the history behind sushi and some of the basics behind making California Roll and how to make a Candy Roll. From there the students learned how to use chopsticks so they could serve themselves some sushi.
The Candy Rolls where a bit of a shocker for the students. They couldn’t believe putting together fruit roll ups, rice krispy treats, gummy worms among other items and then topping it with chocolate sauce and whip cream. Now before you turn your nose up and knock it- you have to try it. It is surprisingly yummy!

The students loved the sushi and couldn’t get enough- of both sushi rolls! Many of the students had never had sushi before and where always afraid to try it- now they can't wait to have more!

Slainte Irish Pub and Restaurant new chef and his move towards gastropub

Slainte Irish Pub and Restaurant located in Historic Fells Point has made some changes- new chef and new menu. You may have heard of the talented Chef Bill Crouse, formally of Sotto Sopra, is making delightful changes to the menu and moving towards gastropub at Slainte.

I had the opportunity to sit down with the owners and chef of Slainte and sample some of the new menu items that sent me home dreaming of more!

Before your meal comes check out some of the new appetizers that will tantalize your taste buds:

Ploughman's Platter ($14) withsmoked fish, cheeses, charcuterie, homemade relish and spread served with toast points. Not only is the plating and presentation appealing to your eyes, but also so are the flavors of each item. Two of my favorite items from the platter were the artichokes with olives and blue cheese with apple slices.

Mushroom Gnudi ($9) - mushroom gnocchi fried to a golden crisp and served with brown butter and sage. They don’t look like your traditional gnocchi but remind me of a risotto. The mushroom flavor isn’t overpowering and the brown butter and sage adds to the flavor sensations.

Spiced Cornflour Calamari ($9) with a smoked pepper aioli. The calamari was perfectly cooked and not chewy. The crispy beet chips added the eye appeal but had a wonderful flavor themselves.
Sauteed Mussels ($9) -P.E.I mussels with tomatoes, basil and garlic in a white wine butter. The sauce is perfect for soaking up with toast points and the not one grain of grit was found in any of the mussels I sampled. The aroma itself will leave you drooling.

RA Sushi rolls out new menu items with tropical

RA Sushi Bar Restaurant has recently updated the dinner, sushi and beverage menus. RA also revamped its popular Happy Hour and Flying Fish Lounge menus to include a greater selection of sushi, appetizers and tapas items.
“To keep the menus fresh and exciting, every year RA Sushi updates its selections to incorporate some of the newest culinary trends and ingredients,” said RA Sushi Executive Chef Tai Obata. “Our most popular dishes have remained on the menu, but we’ve added several new creations, some with a tropical flair.”
One of the first additions is the Otoko Salad: choice of grilled chicken or beef tossed in a spicy yuzu dressing with grilled red and green bell peppers, onions and asparagus; served over a bed of mixed greens in a rice wine vinaigrette, topped with watercress and fried ramen noodles (Chicken: $10/Beef: $12). We were lucky- we got to try it with both the grilled chicken and beef. The salad was fresh and the dressing had the just amount of spicy and tartness.

For entrée selections, it now features Lobster with Garlic Sugar Snap Peas: lobster sautéed with garlic, sugar snap peas and shiitake mushrooms, in an Asian seasoning; served with steamed rice ($17.50). The sugar snap peas still had a nice “snap” to them and the lobster was nicely cooked (not tough or chewy).

Four new sushi rolls have been added to the menu, a couple with a tropical influence…
