Dangerously Delicious Pies REALLY are dangerously delicious (2 pie recipes)

There is something about comfort food that just makes you go Mmmmm! I bet as you were growing up someone you loved and cared about made a pie that you always looked forward to right? Well these two aspects are exactly what Dangerously Delicious does!

Owned by local rocker Rodney Henry and featured on TV sows like Down Home with the Neely’s, Throw Down with Bobby Flay, The Best Thing I Ever Ate “Guilty Pleasure and Pie Paradise. Rodney’s menu of pies will satisfy any customer craving for either sweet or savory.

For us it has become an addiction that started with visiting the Baltimore City Farmer’s Market on Sunday mornings where we would buy 5 mini pies for $20 – which would always pick 5 different flavors! So now we purchase these each visit and plus from time visit the store to buy whole pies.
The menu is host to a wide variety of sweet and savory pies like the Baltimore Bomb made with loaded with Berger Cookies (yes you read that right- a Baltimore treat and specialty) or the Crab and Cheddar.

One of my favorite easy dinners is to actually have pie as the main dish and then pie for dessert – and this is what we did the other night. We started off with the Pork BBQ ($35 for whole pie) and then ended with the Lemon Chess.

Pork BBQ Pie
The Pork BBQ is a slow roasted pork butt with onions, bell peppers and their homemade BBQ sauce – which then pull the pork and bake in into a pie. The flavor is sweet with a nice spicy finish like a good BBQ has! Not only is the BBQ Pork full of flavor but also the crust they use for the pies is buttery and perfect on its own! The price for this whole pie may scare you but honestly there has to be entire large pork roast in that pie!

Now our go to sweet pie that we just LOVE is the Lemon Chess ($28 for whole pie). This orgasmic pie is made with lemon zest, lemon juice, sugar, eggs, Buttermilk and a little bit of cornmeal. This pie is full of flavor and I am not talking about artificial lemon or a bitter bite but a sweet gooey lemon orgasmic flavor! My mouth just waters talking about it (don’t forget about that crust too!)

Now if by chance they wouldn’t have had the Lemon Chess (when I called that day to check on what they had they only had one left and of course I told them to put my name on it) we would have gone with our 2nd favorite the White Trash Creme Brulee.

I completely understand now the name Dangerously Delicious because once you start eating you can’t stop!

Tip: Stop by the stand at the Farmer’s Market and get the 5 for $20 so you can start sampling and find your favorites! Also keep and eye out for the Dangerously Delicious Pie Truck!!!!

Chick-fil-A adds Multigrain Oatmeal to Breakfast Menu

Beginning today (Monday, July 25), Chick-fil-A will add Multigrain Oatmeal.

Starting at $2.49, Chick-fil-A’s wholesome oatmeal is served as a entrée in an 8 oz. bowl or can be purchased as part of a Breakfast Meal, which includes a small coffee and medium fruit cup, starting at $5.65.

Choosing a different approach than most chains, who offer “instant oatmeal” that is prepared by adding hot water to the oatmeal, Chick-fil-A’s Multigrain Oatmeal is slow cooked in kettles to retain the nutritional value naturally found in oats. The mixture is a combination of steel-cut oats, rolled oats, flax, buckwheat flour and whole wheat flour. Customers can choose one of three toppings, including cinnamon brown sugar, roasted mixed nuts (almonds, pecans and walnuts) or a dried fruit blend (cranberries, blueberries, golden raisins and cherries). A serving of oatmeal contains 120 calories and 2.5 grams of fat without toppings and up to 290 calories and 11 grams of fat with the addition of toppings, all with no trans fat.

Woody Faulk, Chick-fil-A’s vice president of brand strategy and design, who oversees the chain’s menu strategy, says the Multigrain Oatmeal is a direct result of feedback Chick-fil-A has received from nutrition-minded customers.
“Our customers have made it clear that they would like to have healthier alternatives for breakfast.” said Faulk. “Over the past few years we have tried to respond to those requests by diversifying our menu with healthier options, such as the Yogurt Parfait we introduced last year, and our Fruit Cup and Multigrain Bagel we added a few years ago. Our menu is all about choices – we offer our signature Chick-fil-A®Chicken Biscuit for the more hearty appetite to the Cinnamon Cluster for those craving something sweet in the morning to the health-minded customer who now has an additional choice of our slow-cooked oatmeal.”
So stop by your local Baltimore area Chick-fil-A and let me know what you thinkg (is it better than McD's???)

B&O American Brasserie and the Hotel Monaco’s Second Annual Crab Bash

We know Baltimore loves their crabs....

On Tuesday, July 26 from 6-9 p.m., award-winning chefs from around the region will cook-off against each other in search of the Best Crab Dish, and bragging rights for the year. In honor of their second anniversary, B&O American Brasserie and the Hotel Monaco Baltimore will host its annual CRAB BASH chef cook-off benefiting the National Aquarium.

Each crab dish will be judged by both attendees and a panel of local celebrity judges including The Baltimore Sun’s Sam Sessa, Baltimore magazine’s Suzanne Loudermilk, Mix 106.5’s Jojo Girard and national food blogger and writer Dara Bunjon (of Dining Dish, Examiner.com, Foodservice Monthly). One chef will be awarded a People’s Choice Award based solely on the votes of attendees and one chef (or possibly the same chef) will be awarded a trophy for Best in Show by the celebrity panel.

For an admission fee of $35, guests are invited to watch the chefs battle it out, sample the chefs’ dishes, enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres from Executive Chef Thomas Dunklin and a complimentary cocktail created for the anniversary by Head Bartender Brendan Dorr. Baltimore restaurants can now share where local foods come from

One of my favorite things about the summer is the availability of fresh produce and goods from local farmers and suppliers.

There are many local Baltimore restaurants that use these local farms or even grow their own produce (farm-to-table or rooftop-to-tabletop).

There is a new website that is partnering with local Baltimore restaurants to help you know where each menu item comes from and is localy sourced called Real Time Farms. Real Time Farms is a crowd-sourced online food guide. They provide you one location where you can learn about where your food comes from, whether staying in or eating out, so you can trust the food you eat.

Restaurants use Real Time Farms to easily share exactly which farms and artisans their ingredients come from. Right now there are 2 local Baltimore restaurants that are participating:
It really great how it works- you roll over a menu item and its ingredients and the name of the local farm, artisans or distributor pops up allowing you to were it is from. You can then click on the local farm, artisans or distributor and learn more about them.

Want to nominate a Baltimore restaurant for "Kitchen Nightmares"?

"Kitchen Nightmares" is currently casting restaurants in the Baltimore area- do you have a place you would like to nominate?

Famed chef and Michelin Star winner Gordon Ramsay steps out of his own five-star establishments and into some of the country’s most unsanitary and unsuccessful restaurants to help them turn their businesses around or close their doors forever.

Each week, Chef Ramsay will attempt to turn one ordinary and empty restaurant into the most popular, sought-after venue in town. He reveals the behind-the-scenes realities of running a restaurant and wastes no time getting down to business – implementing signature menu items, modernizing décor and making the restaurant run as smoothly as possible. With his reputation on the line, Ramsay accepts nothing less than the best when it comes to the food, staff and customer service. While still prone to the explosive outbursts and spectacular confrontations familiar to fans, Ramsay reveals a sensitive and nurturing side as he coaches, cheers and challenges the restaurant staff, all the way from appetizers through dessert. Will the restaurants follow Ramsay’s rules, or will they continue to stumble toward closure?

Baltimore restaurant nominations are wanted! Send the name and location of the restaurant and brief explanation of why you think it DESERVES to be considered for Kitchen Nightmares to kitchennightmares@thecolincompany.com or call and leave a message at 1-866-226-2226
