Spring has sprung with the new Spring “Plates” menu at Capital Grille

Asparagus Soup
It’s once again time for the menus to start changing at restaurants since a new season is upon us. The Capital Grille has launched its Spring “Plates” menu, featuring three new selections that are perfect for the season:  Asparagus Soup, Shrimp and Piquillo Peppers with Crisp Bomba Rice and Grilled Spring VegetablesAs always, guests of The Capital Grille can customize their lunch, choosing from nine “plates” offerings – soup or salad, sandwich and a side – all for $18.

According to Executive Chef Michael Lindsey, it’s out with the cold!  “The new Spring “Plates” lunch menu really highlights some of the crisp, garden-fresh ingredients that are in-season now.

Fresh Squeezed Mint Lemonade
Before sampling the new items on the Spring “Plates” menu, what better way than to sip on a fresh Squeezed Mint Lemonade (brings back childhood memories).

Fresh asparagus is the quintessential spring vegetable, and it stars in the Asparagus Soup. Some may get turned off by the color but don’t let deter you. The flavors and consistency make this rich and smooth soup enjoyable.

For a sweet and spicy kick, try the Shrimp and Piquillo Peppers with Crisp Bomba Rice.  This dish is full of texture and flavors that will have you licking the plate clean – but be careful because it is severed in its own cast iron skillet that it is cooked in.  The kick doesn’t overpower the flavors of the pepper, shrimp and rice combination.

They are also offering side dishes made with the freshest spring ingredients, like the Grilled Spring Vegetables, and French Green Beans, both light and refreshing additions to any of the lunch entrée selections.

Shrimp and Piquillo Peppers
You can also find some of their tried and true favorites on the menu like the Clam Chowder, Mini Tenderloins sandwiches, Lobster Roll and the Truffle Fries.

For guests with a limited amount of time at lunch, The Capital Grille ensures they can enjoy the personalized service and cuisine that characterize a Capital Grille dining experience and still be on their way in about 45 minutes.  Guests can also dine on the traditional lunch favorites like French Onion Soup, The Grille’s Signature Cheeseburger, Ribeye Steak Sandwich with Caramelized Onions and Havarti or the Lobster and Crab Burger, among other classics.

Mt. Washington Tavern rebuild is giving back to the community

It’s been just five months since a multi-alarm fire devastated the Mt. Washington community and destroyed the building of a neighborhood staple.  According to Baltimore City Fire Department’s lead investigator, Mike Friedman, it has been concluded that the fire was accidental in its origin.

From the moment the owners knew of the fire they made a promise to rebuild.  Gathering some of the most talented names in the business to reconstruct the restaurant, the Tavern owners are hopeful for a late fall/early winter re-opening.  Included in the rebuild team are Walter Schamu and his team at SMG Architects whose portfolio includes very noteworthy Baltimore institutions including: the rebuild of the B&O Railroad Museum following a catastrophic roof collapse, the Hippodrome Performing Arts Center and the Bromo Seltzer Tower, as well as Jim Macko of Kodiak Construction whose resume includes notable businesses such as Clipper City Brewery Company and Mustang Alley.
“After digesting the devastating loss we knew we wanted to go with an architect and builder who would not compromise the historic nature and personality of the tavern.  This establishment has meant so much to so many for more than 30 years.  We quickly recognized that the talent of Walter and his team along with Jim Macko are the perfect fit to accomplish this,” says Rob Frisch, co-owner, Mt. Washington Tavern.
During the days of the fire, it became very clear the value this Baltimore staple holds within the community and even around the U.S.  thanks to the hundreds upon hundreds of social media comments made.
“ The outpouring of support was unbelievable,” says Dave Lichty, co-owner of the Tavern.  “We knew this was a special place but to see hundreds post their sympathy and memories on Facebook is truly what got many of us through those first few days after the fire.  We vowed on that day to rebuild and we look forward to sharing Tavern 2.0, as many like to refer to it, with our loyal customers.”
In continuing a long tradition of supporting the Mount Washington community, the Tavern has worked with the construction/architecture teams to create a special bricks project to support the Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital.  The Tavern welcomes the community to “own” a piece of  the Tavern by purchasing a commemorative brick that will be placed along the brick entrances to the restaurant.  Each custom brick will cost $75 with proceeds supporting the neighboring hospital.  They hope to raise $30,000 for the hospital through this project.

Bricks may be purchased and customized at mtwashingtontavern.com now through September 30, 2012.

The framing is just about complete and the plumbers and electricians are about to begin their tasks.  Continued construction updates can be found on the Mt. Washington Tavern Facebook page at facebook.com/mtwashtavern.

The Rusty Scupper celebrates 30 years with lunch special

While many have come and gone, one mainstay of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor for the past three decades is the Rusty Scupper.   Since 1982, diners have enjoyed the Rusty Scupper’s signature crab cakes, blackened rockfish, Kent Island stuffed shrimp and its many other Chesapeake Bay-inspired seafood specialties.   In April the Rusty Scupper will commemorate this important milestone and celebrate its distinction as the oldest restaurant on the Harbor still in its original location.
“The Rusty Scupper was one of the original pioneers of the redevelopment of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and we are proud to remain an integral part of the city,” said Ed Prutzer, General Manager of the Rusty Scupper, a position he has held for 20 years. “The original idea of the restaurant was to serve the highest quality seafood with outstanding service and breath-taking views.  As the saying goes ‘if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.’”
Since 1982 the Rusty Scupper’s iconic neon sign has lit up Baltimore’s Inner Harbor even during two major renovations that added two private function rooms and a 1,200-bottle temperature controlled wine cellar.  Over the years, the restaurant has also added live piano entertainment during dinner hours and a complimentary shuttle service.

In commemoration of its 30th anniversary, the Rusty Scupper will offer a prix-fixe, two-course lunch for $19.82.  The lunch special will run throughout the month of April and will feature items from the restaurant’s original menu.  For the first course, patrons can choose from a cup of cream of crab soup, a cup of Maryland crab soup, Scupper house salad and a traditional Caesar salad.  Entrée choices are broiled crab cake platter, Kent Island stuffed shrimp, fresh North Atlantic salmon, and beer battered fish & chips—all served with wild rice medley and fresh vegetables.

The Rusty Scupper is located on Baltimore’s Inner Harbor at the Inner Harbor Marina (402 Key Highway).
