More than 25 chefs under one roof at 2013 Signature Chefs Auction

Jerry Pellegrino, executive chef, Waterfront Kitchen and Chef Galen Sampson , executive chef, Farmstead Grill (opening in Spring 2014) will lead area chefs for the March of Dimes 2013Signature Chefs Auction. This year’s event will be held on November 4, at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel. Guests will enjoy signature dishes from more than 25 of the area‘s best chefs at the 14th annual event which also marks the 75th Anniversary of the March of Dimes. The evening will include culinary tastings, live and silent auctions of unique dining packages, hotel stays and weekend getaways.

The fundraiser supports the March of Dimes mission to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.  Proceeds will fund research to find answers to the causes of premature birth, which impacts one in eight babies born in Maryland, and support local programs such as Centering Pregnancy, Stork’s Nest, and NICU Family Support programs.

The event co-chairs are Jeff Rivest, president and CEO of the University of Maryland Medical Center and his wife, Mickie.  Special guests include 75th Anniversary Honorees, Chuck and Mary Kay Nabit and celebrity guest, Brenda Frese, University of Maryland women’s basketball coach.

Evening timeline: 5 p.m., VIP reception sponsored by Kelly Benefit Strategies; 6 p.m., tastings and silent auction; 7:45 p.m., live auction; and 8:00 p.m., dessert.

Science on Tap: Beer-ology 101 at the Maryland Science Center

On Thursday, November 7, the Maryland Science Center will say bye-bye to biology and hello to beer-ology with Science on Tap: Beer-ology 101. Guests will tap the beer knowledge from expert brewmasters and scientifically swig from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Fordham and Dominion Brewing Co. representative Casey Hollingsworth will educate adults (21+ only) about the various ingredients in beer and the roles of each in the brewing process, and let guests work with raw brewing ingredients. Budding beer-ologists will also learn about different beer styles and their history and sample specialty brews, ranging from light to dark.
Doors for Science on Tap open at 7:00 p.m., the presentation will run from 7:30 p.m. to approximately 8:30 p.m. and includes drinks, light fare and all the beer knowledge guests can retain. Tickets are $45 per person ($40 for Maryland Science Center members) and can be purchased by calling (410) 545-5980.

Chipotle testing new vegan menu Item in Baltimore

 Chipotle Mexican Grill is expanding the test of its vegan “Sofritas” menu item to the East Coast. Beginning October 21, Chipotle is offering Sofritas in all of its restaurants in Baltimore, Philadelphia, Richmond, and Washington, D.C. The company began testing Sofritas – a shredded tofu braised with chipotle chilies, roasted poblano peppers and a blend of aromatic spices – in seven San Francisco Bay Area restaurants in January, and has since expanded the test to include all of its restaurants in California, Chicago, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Vancouver, Canada.

“Sofritas is a very different kind of menu item, not just for Chipotle but for any fast food or fast casual restaurant,” said Steve Ells, Chipotle founder, chairman and co-CEO. “In creating the recipe for Sofritas, we wanted to produce something that would appeal to vegetarian and vegan customers, but that was delicious enough to have crossover appeal as well.”

Epic scavenger hunt hits the streets of Charm City


Lindy Promotions, Miller Lite and Monster Energy have teamed up for the ridiculously awesome Lindy 500 – Baltimore Limo Scavenger Hunt. Don’t miss the craziest scavenger hunt Baltimore has ever seen! 

The 7th annual, Lindy 500 will take place on Saturday, November 9, 2013 from 3-10pm throughout Charm City’s neighborhoods. Sante: A Culinary Odyssey on November 21


The National Kidney Foundation of Maryland (NKF-MD) will hold its 4th annual Santé: A Culinary Odyssey celebration, Thursday, Nov. 21, from 6 to 10 p.m., at the M&T Bank Stadium, North Club Level (1101 Russell St.) in downtown Baltimore.

With over 750 guests expected, the business/casual fête will feature signature dishes from over 40 top local chefs paired with enticing beverages.

Bartlett the Peter Angelos Distinguished Professor of Surgery and chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, senior vice president and surgeon-in-chief, at the University of Maryland Medical System and immediate past president of the International Pancreas and Islet Transplant Association (IPITA)
  •  Dr. Michael J. Klag dean of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and past chair of both the Association of Schools of Public Health and the NIH Advisory Board on Clinical Research.

Following a car accident at age 16, he was put on dialysis until receiving one of his mother’s kidneys in a transplant the following year.

In the spirit of the holidays, Simpkins will attempt to set a record for the world’s longest cheesecake (50 yards, pumpkin flavored), which he will serve at Santé.


Santé will raise much needed funds for NKF-MD’s patient emergency assistance program, providing essentials such as food, housing costs, utilities, medication and transportation to dialysis. Dollars raised also fund vital research at Johns Hopkins and University of Maryland.

INAUGURAL Baltimore Brew Festival

The inaugural Baltimore Brew Festival will kick off at West Shore Park on Saturday, October 26th, bringing together dozens of craft breweries, including Maryland’s best local breweries. The event will feature live music by an 80’s cover band, food trucks and—most importantly—some delicious beers!

Featured local breweries include DuClaw, Flying Dog, Flying Fish, Full Tilt, National Bohemian, PortCity, Starr Hill, Stillwater, Tall Tales, Union and more. Local eats will be provided by Crusin’ Café, Gypsy Queen, Jurassic Pork and The Smoking Swine.

Admission is $40 for General Admission and $50 for VIP Admission, which includes an additional hour of tasting with some specialty beers poured during the first hour. Both admissions include beer tastings and a commemorative mug. Food is sold separately.

Local Fridays hosts World Bartender Championship

11 TGI Fridays bartenders from the Mid-Atlantic area will continue their quest for the title of the World’s Best Bartender by competing in the Towson divisional finals of the 2013 TGI Fridays World Bartender Championship.

The World Bartender Championship, which started as a one-off challenge between two bartenders, today welcomes more than 8,000 bartenders from around the world in a premier competition widely acknowledged among bartenders as the toughest international bartending competition.

Finalists, known for their bartending knowledge and skill, embody the energetic Fridays feeling every day of the week and represent the rich history of the Fridays bar. Winners from the divisional level advance to the final championship, which will be held in February 2014.
