Mission BBQ and Charm City Cakes are cooking up something for Veterans Day

MISSION BBQ, known for its traditional American BBQ with a hefty side of patriotism, will partner with renowned Charm City Cakes to thank, honor, and salute our country’s veterans and active military personnel on Veterans Day, November 11. Baltimore-based Charm City Cakes will specially-create four WWII Memorial replication cakes (one for each MISSION BBQ location), standing approximately three feet wide, and serving 300-400 slices each. A dedicated World War II Veteran will cut the first slice of cake at each restaurant following a live rendition of the National Anthem. In addition, MISSION BBQ will serve complimentary turkey, pork, and brisket sandwiches along with a slice of cake to all veterans and active military all day, starting at noon, while supplies last.

“We are honored to team up with Charm City Cakes and tip our hats to all of our American Heroes this Veterans Day,” says MISSON BBQ co-owner Bill Kraus. “Freedom isn’t free. These brave men and women protect, serve, and save our country and this is our opportunity to thank them for all that they have done.”

Keeping with its mission to “Proudly Serve Those Who Serve,” MISSION BBQ will open its first location outside of Maryland in York, Pennsylvania in mid-November, bringing its total number of restaurants to five. The patriotic fast-casual BBQ restaurant continues to rapidly expand throughout the Mid-Atlantic with a targeted goal of opening 40 restaurants nationwide by 2018.

About Mission BBQ:
MISSION BBQ first opened its doors on September 11, 2011, on the tenth anniversary of the day that changed the world forever. Owners Bill Kraus and Steve Newton opened the restaurant with a mission to give back to American Heroes, who protect, serve and save.  They traveled across the country, from Texas to Kansas City, to the Carolinas and St. Louis to master America’s greatest contribution to culinary arts: BBQ!  A few favorite menu items include Bay-B-Back Ribs; North Carolina Pulled Pork; and Jalapeno and Cheese Sausage. Each MISSION BBQ location supports and donates proceeds to numerous military charities including the Wounded Warrior Project, USO, Toys for Tots and the Honor Flight Network, as well as the many local police, fire and first responder charities in each of their communities. Every day, at exactly 12 noon, the entire restaurant halts to honor our country by saluting the flag, standing at attention and singing our National Anthem.  MISSION BBQ offers customized catering for parties of all sizes, small and large, and has an authentic deuce and half military truck outfitted with a fully operational smoker that can roll in and feed your army.  For more information about MISSION BBQ, please visit http://mission-bbq.com/. About Charm City Cakes:
Charm City Cakes was founded in 2002 by Chef Duff Goldman, an innovative and boundary-pushing baker. The Baltimore based establishment’s popularity grew and Duff and staff were approached by the Food Network to star in Ace of Cakes. The show ran for ten seasons in six years and is still wildly popular not only in reruns, but in over 40 countries worldwide. The twice nominated James Beard Foundation baker expanded the business in 2011 with a west coast shop, Charm City Cakes West, in Los Angeles, California.

J. Paul's launches new cold weather specials and cocktail

J. Paul’s, the only raw bar on the waterfront in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, has launched a number of new cold weather, seasonal specials, which highlight autumn and winter ingredients. These specials launch today at the restaurant’s Harborplace location and will run through early 2014.
“The Inner Harbor is typically thought of as a place to enjoy when the weather is warm and the sun is shining, but we want our guests to enjoy the harbor all year round,” said Sarah Conlin, Area Director with Capital Restaurant Concepts, who owns and operates J. Paul’s. “Although it may be getting colder outside, both locals and visitors to Baltimore can enjoy our new warm, heartier dishes while experiencing the same beautiful view of the water that you get in summer months.”

New specials include two new appetizer dishes including the Virginia Beef Chili ($7), which combines Virginia ground beef with smoked beef short rib and chili spices, and is topped with cheddar cheese and sour cream. The Baked Oyster ($14) is topped with applewood bacon, smoked gouda cheese, scallions and garlic butter. The new Winter Salmon Salad ($15) highlights winter ingredients and tops mixed greens with grilled salmon, roasted potatoes, dried cherries, apples, hazelnuts and apple cider vinaigrette.

A variety of new entrees, or Harbor Classics, include: the Crab Cake Platter ($26), which pairs J. Paul’s signature Maryland Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes with charred corn mac and cheese with smoked gouda and applewood bacon, alongside a Winter Salad; Chicken Marsala ($17) served with buttered fettucini, goat cheese, wild mushrooms and asparagus; and Grilled Salmon ($22) topped with honey BBQ glaze and served with oven-roasted potatoes, buttered asparagus, toasted pecans and brown butter balsamic reduction.

In celebration of the Baltimore Ravens, J. Paul’s new menu includes the Ravens Nation ($10) cocktail, a purple-colored concoction composed of Bacardi Razz rum, black raspberry liqueur, cranberry juice, lime, a splash of soda, and served with a sugar rim.

In addition to the restaurant’s new cold weather specials, J. Paul’s will also be a part of Downtown Partnership of Baltimore’s Maryland Crab and Oyster Celebration. From October 25th-November 3rd, J, Paul’s will be offering a special menu that highlights crab and oysters from Maryland including: Crab Cake Appetizer ($14), a Maryland jumbo lump crab cake over a boursin-stuffed fried local tomato with corn relish and cherry pepper remoulade; Fried Oyster Po' Boy ($14), local fried oysters in an amoroso roll with lettuce, tomato, red onion and tarragon mayonnaise; and Crab Cake Salad ($15), mixed field greens, tomato, onion, corn, red and green bell peppers and cucumber tossed in peppercorn ranch topped with a Maryland jumbo lump crab cake.  J. Paul’s will also be serving Maryland crab and oyster specialties during the Beer & Urban Oyster Tasting event, which will take place on October 23rd at 5:30pm in Center Plaza, located at the intersection of Charles St. and Fayette St. For more information, visit http://dinedowntownbaltimore.com/.

Since 1997, J. Paul’s has been a part of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, serving true American style cuisine to tourists and locals enjoying the waterfront. A part of Capital Restaurant Concepts, J. Paul’s Harbor Place reopened in June 2012 after closing for renovations, and now features a nautical theme that highlights the stunning views of the Inner Harbor, a new raw bar, and an expanded waterfront patio bar. Diners can choose from a diverse menu of appetizers, salads, sandwiches and entrees during daily lunch and dinner service. J. Paul’s Brunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, and happy hour specials are offered weekdays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Joe's Crab Shack raises $1 Million to help end childhood hunger in America

Team members at Joe’s Crab Shack’s 135 locations worked tirelessly to raise nearly $1.1 million during the month of September for Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign. Share Our Strength estimates that Joe’s donation will help provide more than 10 million meals to children who are struggling with hunger in this country.

“Joe’s set a goal of raising at least $1 million to fight a crisis that threatens our nation’s future,” said Jim Mazany, Joe’s Crab Shack president and 2013 chair of the Share Our Strength’s Dine Out For No Kid Hungry Advisory Board. “Our team and our guests answered the call in a huge way, exceeding our goals and touching the lives of millions of children across America.”

As a national partner and leading fundraiser for No Kid Hungry, Joe’s rallied communities, guests and team members all month long to join in the fight against childhood hunger. Guests donated in increments ranging from $1-$10 in exchange for coupons redeemable for various menu items. Local general managers added to the fun – demonstrating their 100% Shore attitude – with fundraising events ranging from crab boils, beanbag-toss events, dunk tanks and more. Joe’s locations throughout the country held more than 200 fundraising events in September in hopes of ending childhood hunger in America. A longtime supporter of the cause, Joe’s has raised more than $3.3 million for No Kid Hungry since 2008.

“We want to thank Joe’s amazing team of passionate staff who worked hard to spread the No Kid Hungry message and their devoted guests who gave so generously to the effort. Their dedication to our goal of eliminating childhood hunger is inspiring,” said Share Our Strength founder and Chief Executive Officer Billy Shore.

Relay Foods’ locally sourced produce and everyday groceries are now available for pickup at the MAC’s Timonium location

Relay Foods is kicking off an exciting partnership with the Maryland Athletic Club (MAC) by expanding the startup’s popular online grocery service in Baltimore with a new pickup site at the MAC’s Timonium location. Both Relay Foods and the MAC are committed to making healthy living easier and starting this week customers will be able to order their fresh, locally sourced foods and everyday groceries online at RelayFoods.com and conveniently pick them up from the MAC on Wednesdays from 4-7 pm.

Relay Foods’ mission is to make eating healthy local foods as convenient as possible – and the MAC is Baltimore’s community leader in wellness programs and services, with a knowledgeable staff that helps members to achieve their goals and foster an active lifestyle. Beyond just providing a convenient local place to get fresh groceries, Relay Foods is partnering with the MAC on their Healthy Start program and other campaigns to provide added nutritional guidance and expertise. Together, Relay Foods and MAC are working to make healthy living as easy and convenient as possible for the Baltimore community.

"We are very excited about this partnership with Relay Foods. Here at MAC we are advocates and conduits to living a healthy lifestyle and our members know that good nutrition is as important as exercise to achieving their goals,” said Sharon Nevins, VP of Marketing for the Maryland Athletic Club. “Relay Foods is a wonderful resource for our members seeking healthy nutrition options.”

The MAC is Relay Foods’ 6th grocery pickup location in the Baltimore area. This latest expansion comes just as Baltimore farmers’ markets are closing for the season – providing customers an easy alternative to find many of the same local producers of sustainably grown foods all year long, as well as a full selection of grocery staples.

By combining cutting-edge online shopping technology with the quality of farm-fresh food and the convenience of local pickup or home delivery, Relay Foods is rapidly changing the way people get their groceries. This location at the MAC joins Relay Foods growing list of Baltimore pickup sites and their robust home delivery service already serving the area.

“We know how hectic life can get and how many other things are on your to-do list, so by joining forces with the MAC on this grocery pickup location as well as some of their wellness programs, we hope to make living healthier easier for residents in Timonium and all across the Baltimore.” said Relay Foods’ Jen Hawse, Baltimore Sales Manager. “We have had such success in the this area because there is a real demand for convenient and healthy food choices, and Relay Foods is an innovative service that brings both locally sourced sustainable foods and everyday staples right to our customers.”

Relay Foods is incredibly simple– it works like this:
  1. Customers visit RelayFoods.com and fill their virtual cart with unique local food products and the same everyday essentials they’d find in a bricks-and-mortar supermarket.
  2. Orders are put together at a local distribution center and delivered in Relay’s trucks packed in temperature-controlled totes; orders must be placed before midnight on the day of pickup.
  3. Customers can either stop by their local pickup spot to retrieve their groceries at no extra charge, or have their fresh, sustainable groceries delivered right to their doorstep.
Founded in 2009 and based in Charlottesville, Relay Foods works directly with local farmers, growers and merchants, selecting the highest quality sustainable products to offer its customers – while also giving customers access to exhaustive inventory of items regularly available at the supermarket. Currently serving communities all across Baltimore, DC and Virginia, Relay Foods is continually expanding to keep up with growing demand.

More information about the two pickup site launches is available on Facebook and Twitter or by visiting RelayFoods.com
